ABOUT THE LOST ARAL SEA
Echoes of Empire, Salt, and Silence — The Forgotten Majesty of Uzbekistan’s Vanishing Horizons.
Once among the largest inland seas on Earth, the Aral Sea now lies transformed into an otherworldly expanse of silence. Where waves once carried fishing fleets and life thrived along fertile shores, today an immense desert of salt and sand stretches endlessly beneath the sky.
Rusting ships rest on dry ground, monuments to a vanished world, their hollow frames echoing the stories of families, livelihoods, and waters that are no more. Yet within this tragedy lies an austere, haunting beauty. The land shimmers with mirages under the sun, its cracked earth unfolding like a canvas painted in ochres, whites, and shadows. At night, the silence deepens as the Milky Way unfurls above, turning the barren horizon into a stage for the cosmos itself. To stand here is to feel both the fragility of nature and the resilience of memory – an unforgettable encounter with landscapes that seem torn between past and eternity.
The lost Aral Sea is not merely a destination. It is a living story of collapse and transformation, where every photograph becomes more than an image – it becomes testimony. A testimony to water lost, to horizons forgotten, and to the unyielding beauty that still lingers in the silence.
ITINERARY
A Journey Through Lost Oceans, Deserted Ports, and Celestial Nights
There are places on Earth where time seems broken, where history and nature have conspired to leave behind echoes rather than answers. The vanished Aral Sea is one such place. Once the world’s fourth-largest inland sea, it has now retreated into memory – leaving behind stranded ships, endless salt flats, and horizons where silence feels heavier than sound. Yet when the sun dips and the stars emerge, the desert is reborn in celestial grandeur – a stage for some of the most hauntingly beautiful astro-landscapes on Earth.
This 8-day journey is not just a photo tour, it is a pilgrimage into one of the world’s most ex-traordinary and forgotten frontiers.
Note: June days in this region can be very hot, often exceeding 40°C. Nights, however, are cool, calm and comfortable, ideal for long exposures and astro-landscape photography. Our itinerary is designed to maximize shooting during late afternoon, evening, and night, with post-processing and rest during the hottest hours.
Day X: Pre-Tour Preparation
Once seat reservations are confirmed, we’ll ensure all participants are fully prepared for the adventure ahead. Important details, including photo tour highlights, equipment safety tips, and other relevant information will be shared via WhatsApp, email, or phone communication. About 25 to 30 days before the trip, we’ll host two virtual introductory sessions. These meetings give participants the chance to connect, discuss the journey, ask questions, and clarify any concerns. During the second session, we’ll hold a theory class covering fundamentals and creative approaches to both landscape and astro-landscape photography, laying a solid foundation for the incredible shooting opportunities that await.
Day 1: June 11, 2026 - Arrival in Nukus - Gateway to the Aral Sea
Arrive at Nukus Airport (NCU) and transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, join an orientation and recap session covering camera settings, composition planning, blending techniques, and handling extreme light conditions for desert and night photography. The evening is free to relax and prepare for the journey ahead. Overnight stay in Nukus.
Day 2: June 12, 2026 - Nukus to Aral Sea (Camping)
Travel north to Moynaq, visiting the Museum of the Aral Sea and the haunting Ship Graveyard. Continue to the remote eastern shore and set up camp for an unforgettable night under pristine, star-filled skies — perfect for astrophotography.
Note:Â Expect high daytime heat, cool nights, and limited mobile coverage.
Day 3: June 13, 2026 - Eastern Shore to Aral Sea Discovery Yurt Camp
Wake to the quiet desert dawn and travel along the receding shores of the Aral Sea and the dramatic Ustyurt Plateau. By afternoon, reach the Aral Sea Discovery Yurt Camp — simple, authentic, and set in stunning isolation. Evening light turns the cliffs golden before night unveils a dazzling Milky Way, perfect for astro-landscape photography.
Note:Â Expect some walking on uneven terrain and enjoy traditional Karakalpak meals.
Day 4: June 14, 2026 - Aral Sea Discovery Yurt Camp to Khunti Baba (Overnight Shoot)
After breakfast and a post-processing session, we drive to Khunti Baba, a breathtaking stretch of the Ustyurt Plateau with towering cliffs and vast horizons. Note:Â Wear sturdy shoes, warm layers, and follow safety instructions near cliffs.
Day 5: June 15, 2026 - Return to Khunti Baba - Erosion Landscapes & Night Sky
After breakfast and an advanced post-processing session, we head back to Khunti Baba to explore its dramatic cliffs and eroded formations from new angles. As sunset fades into another crystal-clear night, we capture fresh compositions under the Milky Way, deepening our visual story of the plateau’s vast beauty.
Note: Similar conditions as Day 4 — carry warm layers, sturdy shoes, and move carefully near cliffs.
Day 6: June 16, 2026 - Cape Aktumsyk & Cravenserai Ruins
After breakfast, we explore Cape Aktumsyk’s dramatic Ustyurt
landscapes—canyons, caves, and rock formations perfect for photography.
After lunch, we have a short post-processing session at the camp. After dinner, we head to the ancient Kurgancha Caravanserai for a Milky Way shoot, capturing the ruins under star-filled skies. We returned to the camp in the early morning.
Notes: The terrain is uneven, so walk carefully, respect the historic
ruins, and carry a light jacket for the night.”
Day 7: June 17, 2026 - Return to Nukus
After breakfast, we journey back to Nukus, stopping at Sudochie Lake for serene reflections and bird photography, and at the dazzling Barsakelmes Salt Marsh — a surreal, mirror-like landscape perfect for creative shots. Arrive in Nukus by evening for a refreshing rest and a farewell dinner celebrating our Aral adventure.
Note:Â Expect a long drive; carry water, sunscreen, and respect these fragile natural sites.
Day 8: June 18, 2026 - Farewell to the Vanishing Sea
After breakfast, transfer to Nukus Airport for departure. As we leave the silent shores and rusting ships of the Aral Sea, we carry with us powerful memories and images — stories of resilience, beauty, and the timeless meeting of earth and sky.
Note: The locations mentioned in this itinerary are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather, accessibility, or local regulations. In such cases, alternative locations will be arranged at no additional cost, ensuring you still experience the best photographic opportunities and immersive adventure possible.

Can I join as a non-photographer?
Absolutely! Whether you’re accompanying a photography enthusiast or simply drawn to the vast salt flats, rich culture, and raw beauty of the Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan, you are most
welcome to join the journey.
This tour goes far beyond photography. It’s designed to be immersive and inclusive, offering unforgettable experiences for everyone. Over the years, many non-photographers have
travelled with us — spouses, partners, artists, and cultural explorers — and they’ve all found something deeply meaningful in this landscape.
Even without a camera in hand, there’s so much to enjoy: walking across the endless white desert, watching dramatic sunsets over the horizon, experiencing local crafts and traditions, and lying under one of the clearest night skies in the region as the stars unfold above.
You won’t feel left out at all — this trip is about connecting with the spirit of the Aral Sea region, whether through your lens or through your heart.
Please note that although you may join as a non-photographer, the tour cost remains the same for all participants, as every logistical arrangement — including transport, accommodation, permits, meals, and overall support — is equally provided to each guest.
How fit do I need to be to join this photo tour?
You don’t need to be an athlete—moderate physical fitness is enough. However, this tour
includes:
- Walking across rocky desert terrain, salt flats, and stretches of dried seabed
- Occasional short climbs or scrambles around natural formations, such as cliffs along the Ustyurt Plateau
- Staying in remote yurts with basic facilities, where comfort is simple but authentic
- Daily walks in open, exposed landscapes, often under warm or dry conditions
More than physical strength, what truly matters is your willingness to embrace remote settings, adaptability, and openness to the pace of nature.
We return to yurt camps or simple guest stays each night for rest, but expect long days, bumpy desert drives, and a physically engaging connection with the land. If you carry a sense of adventure, you’ll be more than ready for this experience.
What should we expect?
- Temperature Range (July):
Daytime highs: 40 – 45°C
Nighttime lows: 22 – 28°C (can be breezy in open desert areas) - Altitude & Terrain: Most of the region lies at low elevation, with areas around the Ustyurt Plateau reaching up to 150–300 meters.
No risk of altitude sickness. However, expect vast open landscapes, dry desertwinds, dusty tracks, and exposure to strong sunlight during daytime walks and drives. - Connectivity: Mobile networks are available in Nukus and Aral Sea Yurt camp.
Limited or no signal in remote areas of the Ustyurt Plateau.
Internet access may be unavailable for 2 days, so prepare to disconnect and immerse in the experience. - Accommodation: Comfortable hotel stays in Nukus at the beginning and end of the tour.
Camping (one night) and Yurt (4 nights) in safe, picturesque spots – with tented accommodation, and delicious hot meals prepared on-site.
Accommodations are clean, safe, and locally authentic, but expect basic facilities in remote areas. - Travel & Transport:Â Travel in air-conditioned 4×4 vehicles (Toyota Land Cruiser or similar), well-suited for desert and off-road terrain.
Our local drivers are experienced in desert navigation, safety-aware, and knowledgeable about the region’s landscapes.
Expect long off-road drives, occasional bumpy tracks, and stunning desert vistas throughout the journey.
What you should not expect?
- A Luxury Holiday: This is a photographic expedition, not a resort-style vacation. While we prioritise comfort, expect long drives, basic camps, and dusty days in rugged terrain.
- Perfect Comfort: Remote sites lack modern conveniences. Be ready for basic toilets, no showers on some days, and the realities of wilderness camping.
- Predictable Schedules: We may shift plans based on light, weather, or shooting potential. Flexibility is part of the journey—and often leads to the most memorable images.
- Weather: This is the Uzbek summer. Prepare for heat, glare, and dry winds. We’ll provide shade when needed, but sun protection and hydration are essential.
How is this tour different?
- Crafted by photographers for photographers – every location, timing, and session is designed to help you make powerful images, not just collect memories.
- Dedicated to Landscape Shooting – Capture the stark beauty of Uzbekistan’s desert landscapes during golden and blue hours. From sunrise to sunset over the dried sea-bed, every shoot is timed for light, not tourism.
- Dedicated to astro-landscape photography – This journey is aligned with favorable moon phases and clear weather windows to give you the best possible chance to capture the Milky Way above desert cliffs, and the Aral Sea.
- Focused on light and location – Every stop is carefully planned around natural lighting and the raw visual power of places like the Ustyurt Plateau, and the Aral Sea.
- Collaborative, small-group experience – Travel with 4 or 5 fellow photographers in an open, supportive environment that fosters feedback, creativity, and growth.
- Explore remote, untouristed terrain – Stay in yurt camps far from the usual tourist routes, giving you access to unfiltered, cinematic landscapes that few have photographed.
- Mentor-led learning throughout – From mastering composition and exposure in the field to post-processing support after the trip, you’ll receive continuous guidance every step of the way.

Weather
June marks the onset of the intense summer season across Uzbekistan’s Karakalpakstan region, including the Aral Sea basin, the Ustyurt Plateau, and the Moynaq area. Expect classic desert conditions—hot, arid, and largely cloud-free.
Temperature & Climate
- Daytime highs generally reach 40 °C to 45 °C.
- Nights tend to cool to a more comfortable 20 °C to 25 °C.
- Rainfall is extremely rare; June precipitation is minimal in this region.
- Skies are typically clear or nearly cloudless, providing excellent conditions for landscape and night-sky photography.
- Humidity remains very low, making the heat dry rather than muggy.
- UV levels are extremely high; sun exposure is strong, especially in exposed areas such as salt flats, dried seabeds, and cliffs.
- Wind conditions may become gusty—particularly in open plateau or exposed terrain—so be prepared for variable breezes and occasional dust movement.
Photography & Visibility
The dry atmosphere helps yield sharp visibility and clean long-exposures. With minimal moisture or haze, stars, the Milky Way, and distant terrain features will often appear crisp during night sessions and twilight hours.
Essential Gear & Precautions
Given the intense sun, heat, and remote terrain, participants should come prepared with:
- A wide-brimmed hat or sun cap
- High-SPF sunscreen (and reapply regularly)
- Polarized sunglasses
- Lightweight, breathable clothing with full coverage (long sleeves, pants)
- Hydration packs or sufficient water bottles (water will be supplied during the tour)
- A light windbreaker or scarf for dust protection in gusty conditions
- Awareness that sudden dust storms or shifts in wind or temperature may occur in the
most exposed areas
Summary
Tour participants should be ready for:
- Intense daytime heat under strong sun
- Dry, low-humidity air
- Clear skies—ideal for landscape and Astro photography
- Comfortable, cooler nights
- Occasional wind gusts and dust, especially on the plateau
- Nearly zero chances of rain
Weather Disclaimer: Astro landscape photography depends on local weather conditions, which can be unpredictable—though June generally offers the best chances for clear skies.
How to reach Nukus?
Nukus, the capital of the Republic of Karakalpakstan in western Uzbekistan, serves as the starting point of our Aral Sea Photo Tour. The city is accessible by air via Nukus International Airport (IATA: NCU).
RECOMMENDED FLIGHT ROUTES
- Via Tashkent (Uzbekistan): Fly into Tashkent International Airport (TAS) from major international hubs such as Delhi, Istanbul, Dubai, Frankfurt, or Moscow, and then take a domestic flight to Nukus (NCU). Several airlines, operate regular flights between Tashkent and Nukus, typically taking around 2 hours.
- Via Istanbul (Turkey): Travelers from South Asia, Europe, or the Middle East can also fly to Tashkent via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines and then connect onward to Nukus with a domestic flight.
- From India: The most convenient route options are:
- Delhi → Tashkent → Nukus
- Delhi → Istanbul → Tashkent → Nukus
Arrival Recommendation:
Participants are strongly advised to arrive in Nukus at least one day before the official tour begins. This allows time for rest after international travel and provides a buffer in case of flight delays or missed connections. Airport pick-up and transfer arrangements will be provided for participants arriving on the official arrival day.
BY TRAIN OR ROAD (NOT RECOMMENDED)
While Uzbekistan’s rail network connects Tashkent to Nukus, the journey takes 15 to 17 hours and is not ideal for travellers carrying camera equipment or with limited time. Overland travel from neighbouring countries is logistically challenging due to border controls and long distances across desert terrain.
For international participants, air travel remains the fastest, safest, and most comfortable option to reach Nukus and begin the Aral Sea expedition.
