ABOUT THE KUTCH
Kutch Unveiled – Where Ancient Earth Meets Celestial Skies
Located in the extreme west of Gujarat, Kutch—officially spelled Kachchh—is India’s largest district, covering an area of 45,674 km². With its capital at Bhuj, the region is steeped in history, culture, and myth. Kutch has roots tracing back to prehistoric times and features several important sites linked to the Indus Valley Civilization. It is also richly woven into Hindu mythology, adding cultural depth to its natural grandeur.
Geographically, Kutch is virtually an island, bordered by the Gulf of Kutch and the Arabian Sea to the south and west, and flanked by the Great and Little Rann of Kutch to the north and east. Its highest point, Kala Dungar (Black Hill), rises to 458 meters and offers sweeping views of the white salt flats below. The name Kutch itself means a land that “intermittently becomes wet and dry,” referencing the region’s dramatic transformation across seasons.
For photographers, Kutch is a dreamscape. From salt deserts and dry riverbeds to rocky canyons and remote desert trails, the region offers a rich canvas of textures and tones. The low light pollution in many parts of Kutch offers Bortle Class 2 skies, making it one of the best places in India for astro-landscape photography.
